Turkmenistan is rich in energy resources and has a population of about 5 million in a territory roughly the size of Spain. The landlocked country has the third or fourth biggest reserves of gas in the world and huge but largely untapped oil resources. It still imports small amounts of coal to meet its local energy needs. It exports gas and refined oil products.
Most of Turkmenistan's population has remained poor, with socio-economic conditions having deteriorated severely through the 1990s.
