The prosecution in the trial of Topchubek Turgunaliev has demanded a 17-year prison term for the defendant for his alleged leadership in a conspiracy to assassinate Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev, RFE/RL's Bishkek bureau reported on 31 August. Twelve people were arrested last summer in connection with that alleged conspiracy on the basis of testimony given to the National Security Ministry that was later retracted.
