SANTA FE, Texas _ The once quiet, rural towns that line Texas 6 from Sugar Land to Galveston are now swollen with suburban commuters who have brought social and cultural change to this Gulf Coast region.
In Santa Fe, the changes have been profound. The community is no longer virtually all Anglo, all Protestant, or all alone.
The town of 10,000 residents, nestled southeast of Houston and close to Galveston, was recently at the center of a U.S. Supreme Court case banning official prayers at high school football games. In the 1970s, Santa Fe was the site of a Ku Klux Klan rally that some residents say still tarnishes the town.
