McNeil Consumer Healthcare released the following:
The FDA today issued a rare interim final rule on plant stanol/sterol esters, which will allow labeling on Benecol foods stating that they have been proven to lower cholesterol and may lower the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. This is only the 12th food health claim ever issued by the FDA. The FDA took this action on the basis of the public health significance of the cholesterol-lowering benefit of Benecol.
