Sep. 4--The race to bring Latin America's telecommunications services into the 21st Century has a new player with an old family name: AT&T Latin America.
The new firm emerged last week from the blending of three companies: FirstCom of Coral Gables, Keytech LD in Argentina and Brazil's Netstream Telecom.
With a focus on providing high-speed Internet access to business customers, the company represents AT&T's best strategy yet for conquering the Southern Hemisphere. Until now, the phone and cable giant -- which has a controlling stake in the new company -- has had little presence in the region other than its international long-distance business.
