Labor Day 2000 finds the Kentucky AFL-CIO with signs of strength - and signs of weakness.
The union is strong enough to attract a visit today by Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore. At the same time, it also is confronting last week's news that the United Auto Workers members in Kentucky and Indiana are leaving the AFL-CIO, claiming too little return on their union dues.
Kentucky AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Chris Sanders, the organization's chief administrative officer, says that even with the UAW blow, the AFL-CIO in Kentucky has never been more influential.
