Judging from the stately exhibition "1900," shown last spring in Paris, the citizens of the Western world fairly glided from the 19th century into the 20th, rather like the couples departing Cythera in Watteau's lovely idyll: with unfailing grace, rare fashion and more than a soupcon of nostalgia for what was being left behind.
