Says Picking Machine Not Picky Enough
NEW YORK -- Mechanization, which makes it easier and quicker to pick cotton out on the plantation, is making it harder for spinners back at the plant to produce quality yarn.
The problem is that the field equipment picks the cotton, the shell, the dirt, the dust -- just about everything. It picks but it isn't picky, says Arthur E. Brunner, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Rieter Corp., Spartanburg, S.C.
