East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has been working since 1991 on its Year 200X project, to create a low-cost, low-physical-labour track maintenance system.
THE Year 200X project has at its centre the aim of breaking away from labour-oriented work, dangerous tasks near tracks, night working, visual inspections by walking along the track, and management from logbooks and slips of paper.
Five principal targets have been established for the project:
* automation of inspection
* mechanisation of work
* systematisation of management
* reinforcement of track structure, and
