COWS in dairy country across the United States are munching on cotton seeds coated like candy.
The coating is called EasiFlo, the result of a patent developed in the mid-1990s by Cotton Inc. Because cotton seed is a natural blend of fat and protein, it's easily converted by dairy cows into milk fat.
The problem, back then, was that the seeds, in their natural state, were left webby and stuck together after being extracted from the cotton fibers in the ginning process.
The technique developed to make it easier to handle cotton seeds finally resulted in a corn starch coating to improve the seed's ability to flow, a coating like that used in candy ...
