In the United States, football means football and soccer means soccer.

But in most other parts of the world, football means soccer - mainly because the sport of football is actually derived from a game similar to what we now know as soccer.

In 12th century England, football originated as a sport where the players were permitted to kick the ball but not carry it. A modification of that game - in which players could tuck the ball under their arms - was first introduced as rugby at some English schools in 1823.

From rugby, American-style football evolved. And, since then, football and soccer have become two very different games.
