Cray Research, the supercomputer manufacturer based in Wisconsin, builds its machines on a site that once served as a cow field. Herb Sullivan is building a machine in La Jolla that may well put Cray out to pasture.

President of the Sullivan Computer Corp., Sullivan and a group of computer experts are in the final stages of building the next generation of supercomputers. Already dubbed "megacomputers," the machine, said Sullivan, is expected to be 10 to 100 times faster than anything Cray builds.
