Aviation industry observers have indicated that potential merger talks between American Airlines, the USA's second largest carrier, and Northwest Airlines, USA's fourth largest carrier, have cooled since their initiation in mid-June.

Neither carrier has ever confirmed that discussions were being carried out, however the proposal by United Airlines to buy US Airways prompted speculation that American Airlines and Northwest Airlines may also look into a similar deal.
