The news that the big British retailer Marks & Spencer had another rotten financial performance wasn't terribly important to most of us on this side of the Atlantic. After all, the store has been struggling for years and seems to be unable to do much about it. Besides, who really cares about British retailing anyway?
But the news about Marks & Sparks wasn't really the news. The real news was that the financial performance being discussed had to do with sales at the store for the one-week period ended Aug. 9.
