A 19,000-ton British Columbia superferry leaving the Swartz Bay terminal on Vancouver Island collided with a pleasure boat yesterday, crushing the smaller craft.
The owner of the 34-foot boat, a 72-year-old Port Angeles man, died. A female passenger was hospitalized in critical condition.
``The ferry was going dead slow, and it just appeared the (pleasure craft skipper) didn't see it,'' said Ed West of Sidney, B.C., who witnessed the collision from his own boat.
``My wife said, `My God, I can't look. He's not turning.' ''
