A win over Morocco via a second-half Lee Chun-soo penalty kept Korea, officially at least, in the tournament, but Chile's 3-1 win over Spain leaves H h Jung-moo's team needing something approaching a miracle to reach the last eight.
A dour first half was made even worse by a whistle-happy referee, and it was Korea who were eventually to benefit from the man in black's eccentricities.
Despite having most of the possession, the Korean midfield was unable to get much decent supply to the front two. Kim Do-hoon had toiled manfully, getting among the backs in his usual physical style and taking a lot of punishment in return.
