It took one training camp and four regular-season games before Ron Dayne proved himself worthy of being the featured tailback for the University of Wisconsin football team.
That was in 1996. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy and become the all-time leading rusher in NCAA Division I-A history.
A similarly rapid timetable has seen Dayne evolve from a mistake-prone NFL newcomer into a reliable, essential contributor in the New York Giants backfield. Four exhibition outings and three regular-season games removed from his pro debut, Dayne looks an awful lot like a veteran.
