Cost Estimates Almost Double; DOE Stresses Need for Facility.(National Ignition Facility)(Statistical Data Included)

Costs to build the National Ignition Facility (NIF) will be 85 percent higher than originally estimated, according to a June 1 U.S. Department of Energy report to Congress.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where the laser fusion facility is being built, initially estimated cost increases would be 30 percent higher than the original $1.2-billion estimate, or $1.95 billion.

DOE, in its June 1 report, estimated construction costs at $2.25 billion.
