Abstract
According to new statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Norwalk-like, calicivirus-borne disease, a form of nonbacterial gastroenteritis, is the most prevalent foodborne illness in the United States, The Norwalk-like viruses and other small, round-structured gastrointestinal viruses are discussed as a group in this paper under the rubric "Norwalk virus." The Hamilton County Health District in Ohio confirmed four foodborne-disease outbreaks associated with the Norwalk virus over a three-year period from April 1997 to September 1999.
