Sea-based ABM: Not quick, easy or cheap
Dale Eisman's Sept. 13 news story on naval anti-ballistic missile (ABM) systems was quite thorough except for one thing. There was no critique of the $10 billion estimate for deploying such a system.
There ought to be one, since a major alleged advantage of an Aegis-based ABM system is how cheap it would be to deploy.
However, according to a study we'll soon be releasing, a sea-based anti-ballistic missile system would conservatively cost between $37 billion and $43 billion. This includes the cost of upgrading Aegis destroyers to be able to carry and launch larger interceptors, building ...
