Art was the family business
Some families are loaded with talent. The artistic contributions of one such Bay Area dynasty--the family of architect John Galen Howard (1864-1931)--are the subject of a major exhibit opening this month at the Oakland Museum. Trained in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Howard designed many of UC Berkeley's most famous buildings, from the Campanile and Memorial Stadium to Doe Library and Sather Gate. Each of his four sons became an artist, and each married an artist, leaving the Bay Area an extraordinary legacy in architecture, sculpture and painting.
