A Star Is Born has a long, rich Hollywood history. Filmed in 1937 with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, it was retooled as a musical for Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954 and then transposed to the world of rock 'n' roll for Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976.
The Garland version (Warner Bros., $24.98), shot in the new CinemaScope widescreen process, was a comeback for her; she had not made a picture in three years and felt that if this one flopped, her career would be over. But Warner Bros. took no chances and used some of the best talent around. Moss Hart reworked the story, Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin wrote the songs and George Cukor directed. ...
