A group of Korean smokers are expected to file damage suits against the state-run cigarette corporation as a U.S. court on Friday ordered tobacco firms to award $12.7 million to three sick smokers in compensation.
The verdict is the latest blow to beleaguered U.S. cigarette makers from a class-action trial which began in October 1998.
Local health experts and those suffering from smoke-related illnesses welcomed the compensation order by the Florida court, urging the Korea Tobacco and Ginseng Corp. (KT&G) to compensate some victims.
