Prosecutors made an unsuccessful attempt to arrest Rep. Chung Hyung-keun of the main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) over the weekend for his alleged smear campaign against President Kim Dae-jung and his aides.
Investigators at the Seoul District Prosecutor's Office hinted that the prosecution will continue its efforts to take the lawmaker into custody until Monday, a day before an ad-hoc parliamentary session convenes.
Chung is accused of defaming President Kim with remarks made during a rally in Pusan City in November. He allegedly described Kim as ``communist partisan.''
