"I Love to Tell the Story" has been a favorite hymn of American evangelicals since its composition in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. Kathryn Long does smartly by its refrain in this book, for she not only redefines the ethos from which such hymns emerged but does so by excavating the several layers of storytelling that have gone into defining its seminal event, the 1857-58 revival.
