The Korean old saying ``If a horse is born, send it to Cheju-do and if a person is born, send him/her to Seoul'' can't be heard any more. The once- remote island has earned fame as a tourist destination since mid-1970s. Especially, honeymooners visit the sub-tropical island in the South Sea all year round.
Cheju-do is basically an island composed of extinct volcanoes, thus formed by volcanic matter such as basalt and trachyte, mixed with sedimentary rock and clay. The most distinctive geographical feature is its lava cave zone. With more than 60 lava caves being found to date, they make Cheju the best place in the world to observe this natural wonder.
