The Defense Ministry said yesterday that the use of defoliants near the Demilitarized Zone in the late 1960s was at the request of U.S. Forces Korea.
``After the request was lodged, the South Korean military recognized the need to use defoliants and asked the United Nations Command to deliver them,'' said Kim Tae-young, deputy director of the ministry's defense policy bureau.
Kim's remarks contradicted an earlier U.S. Department of Defense announcement which said the defoliation mission started in accordance with ``a decision by the South Korean government and military.''
