Sep. 27--HOOD RIVER, Ore.--The 60 remaining employees at the Hood River Valley's last operating sawmill have been sent home, about a month sooner than they expected to be laid off.
Neither the mill's manager nor the president of Quality Veneer & Lumber, the 2-year-old Seattle-based company that owns Hanel Lumber Co., could be reached to comment on Monday's abrupt closure.
Quality laid off half the mill's 120 employees last week after the last logs on the mill's storage deck were sawed. At that time, mill officials expected to keep the remaining employees at work until the lumber was processed, possibly through the end of October.
