LEXINGTON, Ky. _ If racehorses were accelerating as fast as horse sales, the Kentucky Derby next year would be the most exciting minute and a half in sports.
The largest sale in the world of potential racehorses, Keeneland's September Yearling Sale, shattered records set only a year ago with incendiary prices that have breeders racing to the barns. The sale, which ended this week, was longer (13 days), bigger (3,313 horses) and richer (nearly $292 million) than ever before.
At the top end of the market, 28 horses sold for more than a million dollars, more than twice as many as just two years ago.
