You won't catch conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi admitting what's been common knowledge for years: that the Cleveland Orchestra is probably the best in the country today - and one of the elite orchestras of the world.
"Orchestras are different, have different styles," Dohnanyi, Cleveland's music director since 1984, said from his Ohio home. "I always say we shouldn't be second to anybody. But who is the most beautiful woman? It's a matter of taste."
Spoken like a gentleman - and like a man who knows he doesn't have to do anything to argue Cleveland's case except raise his baton to give the players a downbeat.
