An 800-year old pine tree with an interesting historical background will be preserved using genetic engineering.
The provincial government's Institute of Forest Protection & Management Research said it has decided to replicate the tree to preserve the genetic traits of the pine, which has seen much history but now continues to wither.
The tree stands as a natural monument at the entrance to Mt. Songni National Park in Poun-gun, Chungchong-pukto, some 200 kilometers south of Seoul.
``We have decided to replicate the pine by copying and cultivating its cells,'' a plant researcher of the institute said.
