CLEVELAND _ Late Sunday afternoon, Indians manager Charlie Manuel relaxed in his office at Jacobs Field. Out in the parking lot in his car sat his luggage, packed for a flight to the West Coast. On the TV to his right was alternating coverage of the games that would determine whether Manuel had packed in vain.
The Indians had just finished their 162-game season and a tremendous final two months by rocking Jacobs Field with an 11-4 victory over Toronto. But they still didn't know whether they would make the playoffs for the sixth straight season.
