Identification of Diseases Endemic to the Theater of Operations
The United States deployed nearly 700 000 military personnel to the Persian Gulf region between August 1990 and February 1991 for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.[1,2] Tens of thousands of Persian Gulf War veterans (GWVs) have presented with medical symptoms since their service in these deployments; some may have diseases endemic to the Persian Gulf region.[3] Many of the endemic medical and environmental conditions of the Persian Gulf region are not unique to the Persian Gulf; however, they are rarely seen by pathologists in the United States.
