On a recent brilliant autumn day, a farmer led his herd of Tibetan yaks up a slope and across the wind-blown green land.

This was not a scene from the Tibetan Plateau. The yak farmer was John Hooper, an ordinary American guy. The exotic oxen were the livestock on his farm near Cold Spring, Minn.
