CHICAGO _ Paul Konerko is a household name in Johnston, R.I., where he spent the first few years of his life, and in Cranston, where he still has relatives.
Friends and family in those Rhode Island cities are well aware that Konerko has been a mainstay on the team that posted the best record in the American League, earning home-field advantage in the playoffs, which begin Tuesday.
But it may come as a surprise to some of the more casual baseball fans that the best team in the A.L. has not been the New York Yankees. It has not been the Cleveland Indians. It has not been the Oakland Athletics or the Seattle Mariners.
