Like a country singer with a song climbing the pop charts, the herbal superstar valerian has become a crossover artist in its own right.
Long a bestseller at health food stores, where it's known as a gentle sedative and insomnia treatment, valerian has made the leap from supplement to main ingredient in an over-the-counter sleep aid by a major pharmaceutical company. The product, called Alluna Sleep, which also contains hops, hit stores late this summer with an advertising blitz touting its ability to help your body "maintain its own natural sleep pattern so you wake up refreshed."
