EDWARD L. Masry only intended to do a favor for a friend when he found himself hip deep in alligators back in 1993.
What started out as a relatively straightforward real estate negotiation on behalf of a resident of Hinkley, Calif., turned into a case of toxic contamination of groundwater so large that it affected more than 600 people and resulted in a $330 million settlement against Pacific Gas & Electric Co.
