Metal centers are waking up to the opportunities that today's bar codes are presenting for industrial applications, such as improved inventory management and tracking of materials from the mill to the end user.

The bar code, once considered strictly a warehouse tool, is emerging as key to propelling goods through the supply chain in a just-in-time fashion.

As technologies evolve that allow for implanting data-laden computer chips in bar codes, and as long-distance and remote access to that data becomes more feasible, bar codes can be used to speed the tracing of goods in warehouses, on retailer's floors and even en route between destinations.
