Waimea's sugar shacks

In 1982, among the casualties in Hurricane Iwa's wake, were plantation homes owned by the Kikiaola Land Co. Damage to the cottages amounted to about $1 million, a devastating blow to the small Waimea-based operation. But instead of razing the properties, clearing the land and starting anew, Mike Faye, manager of the family-owned business, had other plans. He repaired, renovated and transformed a number of the plantation-style homes into full-on vacation rental cottages -- a project that his family had considered tackling for more than two decades.
