Schools would be graded along with their students under a proposed state accountability plan that also would add seventh-grade exams to the battery of tests required in Minnesota.
The Department of Children, Families and Learning plans to ask the Legislature next year to approve a system of gauging schools that would identify them as "needing improvement," "making progress" or "meeting expectations," or perhaps "star schools."
The vehicle for grading schools would be students' performance on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs), rigorous reading, math and writing tests now given to third- and fifth-graders.
