The Early Upper Palaeolithic of Britain, unlike the Late Upper Palaeolithic, has remained poorly understood chronologically, largely due to the lack of cutmarked or otherwise culturally modified organic items which may be said clearly to represent human activity (Jacobi 1999). A culturally diagnostic item that may be dated directly is therefore most important. Here, the AMS radiocarbon dating of such an item is presented and the implications of the result discussed.
