Of the available selection techniques personal statements (PSs) are one of the most widely used (Anderson & Shackleton, 1993; Harris, Dworkin, & Park, 1990; Shackleton & Newell, 1991; Steiner & Gilliland, 1996). However, while there is ample work demonstrating the predictive validity of other `popular' selection techniques including (1) bio-data blanks (Hunter & Hunter, 1984) and (2) personality measures (Barrick & Mount, 1991; Salgado, 1997; Salgado & Rumbo, 1997; Tett, Jackson, & Rothstein, 1991) there are no data relating to the predictive validity of actual PSs categories (see Anderson & Shackleton, 1993; Kluger, Reilly, & Russell, 1991).
