- Today is Dassehra, also known as Dasharam or Vijaya Dashami, when Hindus conclude 10 days of honoring various goddesses. It celebrates the victory of good over evil. In south India the defeat of the demon Ravana by Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, is celebrated. There usually are huge paper statues, and on the 10th night of the festival, an actor, playing Rama, ignites the firecracker-filled statue of Ravana, reducing it to ashes.

- Yom Kippur begins at sundown Sunday and continues through Monday. It is the annual day of atonement, coming 10 days after the start of the Jewish New Year. It is the most important day of the Jewish year.
