A few years back, most Americans knew nothing of Africa's AIDS crisis. Today they do. They know that more than 24.5 million sub-Saharan Africans are infected with HIV, that millions have died, that millions have been orphaned. They know the virus is spreading quickly, and that most African countries are too poor to stop it.
They know all this, but do they care? It's really quite hard to tell. If Americans cared, wouldn't they demand that their government act?
They've made no such demand. They don't seem especially worried. Perhaps that's because they haven't imagined what Africa's AIDS problems could lead to. But the Central Intelligence Agency has ...
