Oct. 8--NIOBRARA, Neb.--The mother of three sailors killed in waters off Vietnam -- believed to be the worst wartime tragedy affecting one Nebraska family -- has lost virtually all veterans benefits related to her sons.
Why?
Eunice Sage, a 77-year-old widow, accepted an offer to cook breakfast and supper for a neighbor for $6.50 an hour.
The estimated $100 or so each month she earned put her above the income guidelines to receive the full amount of Death and Indemnity Compensation from the U.S. government.
And, because she didn't report the new income immediately, her benefits were cut even more -- from more than $400 a month to $15 -- ...
