OKLAHOMA CITY _ This is a city that hasn't gotten much respect, from the outside world or even from itself.

Bisected by the Canadian River (which locals joke is the only river that needs mowing three times a year), its economy dominated by the cattle industry (step outside a downtown building, and some days you can smell the evidence of the giant stockyards operation just west of downtown), it has been hammered for being dull and dusty, unsophisticated and unattractive. Even Tulsa looked down on it.
