Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling, who was the prime minister of the Bahamas for 25 years, recently died of prostate cancer at his home in Nassau. He was 70.

Sir Lynden became premier in 1967 and held the position until 1992. Throughout his tenure as prime minister, Sir Lynden led the Bahamas through a transition from a British colony to independence in 1973. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1983.

Sir Lynden was the second man to head a government in the Bahamas at the time when the tiny colony adopted a ministerial form of government in January 1964, and, at that time, he was the first to be chosen under its new constitution.
