BOSTON--Some 1,200 women and a few men attended the 21st annual conference of theNational Women's Studies Association (NWSA) held at Simmons College. This year's conference featured a one-day Lesbian Institute.
"This is the first lesbian plenary organized by the Lesbian Caucus," said Bette Tallen, a long-time NWSA Governing Council member who works on diversity programming at the University of Central Florida. "We are an organization that is at least half lesbian and we have a majority of lesbians on the Governing Council," she said in speech at the plenary of the Dana Shugar Lesbian Studies Institute, but many lesbians won't speak out as lesbians.
