The "frock" in "frock rock" is something of a misnomer, referring to the perception of women rather than the reality of their stage wardrobes. As Mavis Bayton notes, "The expectation that women look 'attractive' is both a constraint and a pressure, and women who deviate can expect censure" (p. 107).
