The "frock" in "frock rock" is something of a misnomer, referring to the perception of women rather than the reality of their stage wardrobes. As Mavis Bayton notes, "The expectation that women look 'attractive' is both a constraint and a pressure, and women who deviate can expect censure" (p. 107). The connection between perceptions of women in popular music and expectations of them by audiences finds one of its more obvious outlets in the question of body image.
