By a wide margin, Labrador retrievers will outnumber all other sporting-dog breeds when Minnesota's 2000 ringneck season opens at 9 a.m. Saturday.
But are Labs the best pheasant dogs?
Springer spaniel aficionados might say no. They prefer their charges to be smaller than Labs, with top-notch noses, fast legs - and faster tails.
And what of English pointers and English setters?
Or German wirehaired pointers and Brittany spaniels?
Anyone who has hunted over a good pointing dog knows what great bird producers they can be.
